Research relevant to the Port Stephens/Newcastle Proposal
Pacific Offshore Wind Project
Gov Study - Section 7.1.2 "The Project is within Commonwealth waters, therefore there will likely be direct impacts to Commonwealth marine areas, as a result of cable laying (or removal), installation of anchorage points and mooring lines, introduction of pest species or changes to hydrodynamics. With appropriate controls in place, these impacts are considered to be a medium risk, which is localised. They are unlikely to have a ‘substantial’ or ‘persistent’ adverse impact on the Commonwealth marine environment. Some impacts such as underwater noise, entanglement or lighting pollution may cause some avoidance behaviour in certain species.
Because, at this early stage in the Project, it is possible that turbines may result in an adverse effect on cetaceans, and to be conservative, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT IMPACTS TO COMMONWEALTH MARINE AREAS ARE SIGNIFICANT." Read more...
GENERAL RESEARCH AND STUDIES
28.05.24 Proposed wind and solar factories across Queensland
“There are currently 3,365 turbines proposed for Qld delivering name plate capacity of approx. 22,874MW. This excludes the wind farms that I know are planned but don’t have turbine quantities for. The proposed Proserpine Wind Farm for example will have over 200 turbines so safe to assume there are over 4,000 turbines thus far. Considering a capacity factor of say 25% then we will need to double this number of turbines to say 6,600 turbines to keep lights on at night in summer if there is wind.
If we have a few nights of no wind and the proposed theoretical Eungella Pumped Hydro is built then we can keep lights on for a few hours here and there.
To achieve true Net Zero (removing carbon from agriculture and transport fleet) then pick a number above 20,000 turbines required and if no wind start building a fleet of gas plants.
If we want theoretical hydrogen add another 10,000 - 25,000 turbines again if you can find any more land where there is wind.
There are some wind farms down south of the state that I am unfamiliar with and seem to be on either cleared or mostly cleared land. I have ground truthed many sites from Gladstone north and many are in very high biodiverse areas due to their untouched rugged and remote topography. I’ve left Chalumbin WF on my animation because it will no doubt come back in some form or another depending on who gets the available capacity first in the transmission.

"The Ocean Integrity Group has stood alone as an environmental organization against the offshore wind industry. Finally, governments are listening.
We are sending letters to offshore wind companies to cease and desist.
Our offshore waters must be preserved for the coastal communities that depend on them. We can’t stand idly by and watch our seas be decimated by this disgusting industry.
The offshore wind structures are further decimating plankton numbers in our ocean. Inshore waters around Denmark have little to no marine life. The offshore wind industry caused this. Within a few years of the construction of these offshore wind farms, all marine life started to be affected. Filter feeders such as mussels and oysters caused this problem. They flourished on these structures and were completely invasive to the offshore areas. As fish spawned, the filter feeders ate everything. The same thing will happen off the east coast of the United States and, of course, anywhere else in the world. The Swedish government finally agrees with our assessment and has cancelled all wind projects, deeming them to have a negative impact on our environment".

About us: Rainforest Reserves Australia is a small volunteer based Not-For-Profit who stand for the preservation and protection of Queensland's nature. We're completely independent which allows us to do the critical work we do. Over the last few years, we've raised significant media attention regarding plight of wildlife and wilderness to be impacted by Chalumbin and Upper Burdekin wind developments, and have directed focus on clearing of Koala habitat from inappropriate wind developments in QLD.
